Opel Vectra and Citroen C4 are have different markets. IE 8 for XP is a Ie7 with a facelift. Ie6 at the time was Mercedes... read the wiki... I was Fantastic:) ... then Mozilla came along and Safari with its webkit engine and fucked it all up. I don't use IE but for the normal user... it's enough... quite good and like windows... everyone knows how to use it... must be genetics:)

Actually they have quite a lot more duty: like making automatic update (which not even in IE8 is not available - Firefox has it since version 2) and according to W3c only 23% of users use IE6 and IE7 but it's still very high.
I'm not just talking about IE6 but there actually is a version of IE8 which is IE7 but with some minor improvements and a different name. And IE8 in my opinion is a big failure as well (compared to the browser launched the same time as it or maybe even before it). Compared to other versions is way better but it's still shit!
And if you're comparing cars, I don't think you should say that Internet Explorer is german (and not just ant German but Mercedes - the best) - Internet Explorer is actually like a 2006 Citroen C4 and Firefox is like a 2005 Opel Vectra (it's older but far superior and better thought) :)

CSS 2.1 is supported to some degree... I guess the fault is that of the users that are too stupid and don't know how to upgrade. Developers have a duty to make IE6 and 7 compatible websites because 30% of the traffic is made from IE6 and IE7 users...
A new 2010 Kia will always be better than a 1990 mercedes benz... that is just how life is.

Actually, IE6 does not support a lot of CSS features. I'm not talking about the issues here, just the lack of features + some CSS features that IE has are wrongly thought.
Javascript, don't even get me started.. IE6 is just way too obsolete. It was good when it came out (even I used it) but right now it's total CRAP.

The point that you are missing is that Microsoft tried to impose a standard and lost to Gecko and Web kit based browsers... If IE never existed (if we could comprehend such a world) then Netscape wouldn't have been destroyed and Mozilla would have never existed. W3 would serve no purpose because Netscape is so great and no standards are needed :D except those of Netscape.
Little children in Africa would suffer if IE never existed.
Quick note: IE6 is not a bad browser, it just has different rules. If you make good CSS there is no issue with IE... just some complementary rules to enforce boundaries better in IE. Most "errors" revolve around the document flow and if you get that right... IE6 will look great... Now, if you're talking about JavaScript... you might be right...

"There would have been no reason for Netscape to exist..."
Netscape is antecedent to IE (even before it was called IE): let's not take this chunk of bits as a reference. The web will be 10 years ahead if IE did not exist at all.

I'm not saying that its existence wasn't good. It was very good but right now it's very toxic for the web. After the launch of IE6 there hasn't been any version of IE that would actually even measure up to what the web needs. I'm just saying that IE is a browser that shouldn't exist anymore.

If for no other reason, the existence of IE is good for what it has meant for web innovation. If IE didn't exist, there would be no reason for the current push toward standards, which is good for everyone. There would have been no reason for Netscape to exist, hence no Mozilla Foundation, no Firefox, no Chrome, no Safari. The Web would not have developed in the way it has now. Think about it.
